A Rebuttal To The MoveOn.Org Ad

General David Petraeus is too dignified and honorable a man to defend himself against the likes of MoveOn.Org's reprehensible ad in Monday's New York Slimes. Therefore, he has left it to me to offer a rebuttal on his behalf. I only hope that I can do him justice. Good hunting and Godspeed, Good Sir!

Here is the infamous MoveOn.Org full-page ad...

Since the words in this picture are too small to read, let me quote them here (Aghhh! Don't puke on your computer)...

General Petraeus is a military man constantly at war with the facts. In 2004, just before the election, he said there was "tangible progress" in Iraq and that "Iraqi leaders are stepping forward." And last week Petraeus, the architect of the escalation of troops in Iraq, said, "We say we have achieved progress, and we are obviously going to do everything we can to build on that progress."

Every independent report on the ground situation in Iraq shows that the surge strategy has failed. Yet the General claims a reduction in violence. That's because, according to the New York Times, the Pentagon has adopted a bizarre formula for keeping tabs on violence. For example, deaths by car bombs don't count. The Washington Post reported that assassinations only count if you're shot in the back of the head - not the front. According to the Associated Press, there have been more civilian deaths and more American soldier deaths in the past three months than in any other summer we've been there. We'll hear of neighborhoods where violence has decreased. But we won't hear that those neighborhoods have been ethnically cleansed.

Most importantly, General Petraeus will not admit what everyone knows: Iraq is mired in an unwinnable religious civil war. We may hear of a plan to withdraw a few thousand American troops. But we won't hear what Americans are desperate to hear: a timetable for withdrawing all our troops. General Petraeus has actually said American troops will need to stay in Iraq for as long as ten years.

Today, before Congress and before the American people, General Petraeus is likely to become General Betray Us.

My rebuttal follows. Just for a laugh, compare the wording...

God Bless those who serve our country. God Bless those who risk their lives to provide the idiots at MoveOn.Org the freedom to be idiots. May God especially Bless the families and friends of those whose loved ones have made the ultimate sacrifice for those of us who are so undeserving.

Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. --John 15:13

A guest blogger at "Villainous Company" posted an excellent analogy for why we're in Iraq:

Don't Close Your Blinds

The other day, my nine year old son wanted to know why we were at war. My husband looked at our son and then looked at me. My husband and I were in the Army during the Gulf War, and we would be honored to serve and defend our Country again today. I knew that my husband would give him a good explanation. My husband thought for a few minutes and then told my son to go stand in our front living room window.

He told him, "Son, stand there and tell me what you see?"

Our son replied, "I see trees and cars and our neighbor's houses."

"OK, now I want you to pretend that our house and our yard is the United States of America, and you are President Bush."

Our son giggled and said, "OK."
"Now, Son, I want you to look out the window and pretend that every house and yard on this block is a different country."

"OK Dad, I'm pretending."

"Now I want you to stand there and look out the window and see a man come out of his house with his wife. He has her by the hair. and he is hitting her. You see her bleeding and crying. He hits her in the face and throws her on the ground. Then he starts to kick her to death. Their children run out and are afraid to stop him. They are crying. They are watching this but do nothing because they are kids and afraid of their father. You see all of this, Son. What do you do?"

"Dad?"

"What do you do, Son?"

"I call the police, Dad."

"OK. Pretend that the police are the United Nations. They take your call, listen to what you know and saw, but they refuse to help. What do you do then, Son?"

"Dad...but the police are supposed to help!" My son starts to whine.

"They don't want to because they say it's not their place, or your place, to get involved, and you should stay out of it." My husband explains.

"But Dad...he killed her!" My son exclaims.

"I know he did, but the police told you to stay out of it. Now, I want you to look out that window and pretend you see our neighbor, who you're pretending is al Qaeda, turn around and do the same thing to his children."

"Daddy...he kills them?"

"Yes, Son, he does. What do you do?"

"Well, if the police don't want to help, I will go and ask my next door neighbor to help me stop him." Our son says.

"Son, our next door neighbor sees what is happening and refuses to get involved as well. He refuses to open the door and help you stop him."

"But Dad, I NEED help! I can't stop him by myself!"

"WHAT DO YOU DO, SON?" Our son starts to cry. "OK, no one wants to help you. The man across the street saw you ask for help and saw that no one would help you stop him. He stands taller and puffs out his chest. Guess what he does next, Son?"

"What, Daddy?"

"He walks across the street to the old lady’s house, breaks down her door and drags her out. He steals all her stuff and sets her house on fire, and then...he kills her. He turns around and sees you standing in the window and laughs at you. WHAT DO YOU DO?"

"Daddy..."

"WHAT. DO. YOU. DO?"

Our son is crying and he looks down and he whispers, "I close the blinds, Daddy."

My husband looks at our son with tears in his eyes and asks him... "Why?"

"Because Daddy.....the police are supposed to help people who needs it....and they won't help. You always say that neighbors are supposed to HELP neighbors, but they won't help either...they won't help me stop him...I'm afraid....I can't do it by myself, Daddy.....I can't look out my window and just watch him do all these terrible things and...and.....do nothing...so....I'm just going to close the blinds....so I can't see what he's doing........and I'm going to pretend that it is not happening."

I start to cry. My husband looks at our nine year old son standing in the window, looking pitiful and ashamed at his answers to my husbands questions and he tells him...."Son..."

"Yes, Daddy."

"Open the blinds because that man.... he's at your front door...WHAT DO YOU DO?"

My son looks at his father, anger and defiance in his eyes. He balls up his tiny fists, looks his father square in the eyes and without hesitation he says, "I DEFEND MY FAMILY, DAD! I'M NOT GONNA LET HIM HURT MOMMY OR MY SISTER, DAD!! I'M GONNA FIGHT HIM, DAD. I'M GONNA FIGHT HIM!!!"

I see a tear roll down my husband's cheek. He grabs our son to his chest, hugs him tight, and cries. Then he whispers, "It's too late to fight him. He's too strong, and he's already at YOUR front door, Son.....you should have stopped him BEFORE he killed his wife. You HAVE to do what's right, even if you have to do it alone. Before it's too late."

This is why we are at war in Iraq. Good people standing by, letting evil happen is the greatest evil of all. Our President is doing what is right. We, as a free nation, must understand that this war is a war for all humanity. We must defeat that evil, so that we can continue to live in a free world where we are not afraid to look out our window. You must never be afraid to do what is right, even if you have to do it alone. So that, in the future, our children will never have to close their blinds.

Hank,
It's getting to the point where I'm not hardly surprised at anything the Libs do anymore. They're simply pathetic an unprincipled. I just felt that I couldn't let this one go without a response... if ya know what I mean.

(:D) Best regards...

As repulsive as I find it to call a CAREER SOLDIER, or ANY SOLDIER a traitor, (without cause), MoveOn cannot even think for themselves. A few weeks ago, (maybe months), I saw a political cartoon, that had a picture of the General AND Harry Reid, with the words Petraus under the General, and "Betray Us" under the Traitor Reid. I will try to find the cartoon, it may have been in the Washington Times.

I think some of the Dimocritters will now have to add some words to their mantra like, "We support the troops, UNLESS they dedicate their entire life and career to military service and move up through the ranks to become a 4 Star General!"

Of course it may have to be changed if any more Soldiers come to tell that they believe things are improving!

RAM,
Excellent comment. It's amazing how these Democruds constantly contradict themselves, isn't it? They believe in "choice", but not if it entails school vouchers. They believe in "free speech", but not if it's conservative talk radio. They "support the troops", but not General Petraeus... I guess they only support the grunts, eh?

They're all turds! (Can I use that word?)

Camojack – that's an 'excellent analogy'? That's propaganda! That's brainwashing! That's the kind of thing that goes on in the madrasses you hate so much! It's child abuse! And it is patently false! Lawdy, that po' chil'! I really think the social sevices should be involved.

Anyhoo, two questions about your 'Move on or Moron?' (Where did you get that, BTW? You really should quote your sources, y'know).

What does the NYT's advertising rate have to do with MoveOn.org's assessment? Ad what does that last quote from Soros have to do with..um...anything, really? Ever heard of a 'non sequitur'?

Cheers

Elroy

I'm slow, but will get there sooner or later. Asthma season has set in.

Camojack that was a good analogy.

I think our socialist president who is the hero of the left, FDR, would have a warm cell waiting for the traitors. Like it or not, we are in a fully backed, by the congress, war. Bush did not wake up one morning with a decision to go. Even Hillary said--let's roll. Er, something to that effect.

I hope that Moron.org, Soros & the NY Times rue the day that ad ran. I don't know if you are aware of a group of vets plus others at Gathering of eagles dot org. A great group.

Hawkeye ,great job!!Soros is probably a greater immediate threat to the USA, than the Islamofacists.
The evil one sold out his own people to the Nazis ,for filthy old money,so,who knows where his money is coming from . He's certainly no genius.
Camo ,your story hit the mark ,sent little Elroy right over the top.
For freedom of the Press to actually work ,there has to be some self-policing,some fairness, some admitting what one's forum stands for ,but the NYT wants to have it both ways.Claiming to be unbiased ,as they back anything UnAmerican .
And Elroy, stop me if we're going too fast for you. Soros claimed he once was a human being. He never was.Pure Devil Spawn.

Where is your evidence that Soros got his money from the Nazis? He worked for the Jewish Council in Hungary when he was 13 and did not know what the consequences of his actions were – he was a messenger boy, and not for very long. This is hardly the source of his fortune. But that's the reality of the situation, so I know it'll be a bit hard for y'all to digest.

However, I know who DID get their money from the Nazis, and it ain't THIS George! The one I'm thinking of is he one who woke up one morming and decided to go to war.

And where is your evidence that Soros is 'Devil's spawn'? It seems to me that he is but a successful capitalist. Is that your problem? That Soros is somehow biting the hand?

Elroy,
'Move on or Moron?' (Where did you get that, BTW? You really should quote your sources, y'know).
I made it up on the fly. Coulda been I heard it somewhere before though. I don't think it's been copyrighted though if that's what you mean.

What does the NYT's advertising rate have to do with MoveOn.org's assessment?
Nothing really. The goal of my article was to try and mimic the wording in the original MoveOn ad. Couldn't really do it at that point so I went off on a tangent focusing on the words "New York Times" and "bizarre formula" which were in close proximity in the original ad. Besides, it was a related story.

A(n)d what does that last quote from Soros have to do with..um...anything, really? Ever heard of a 'non sequitur'?
Last I heard, satirists are not required to strictly follow the rules of logic. This was clearly a satire piece. I just wanted to get a REAL quote from Soros since the MoveOn ad used a similar phrase "General Petraeus has actually said". It was the first quote I found that was mildly amusing.

There now. Feel better?

Cheers

Anonymous,
Sorry, but you're wrong on all counts...

1) It is not "feigned" outrage, but "TRUE" outrage.

2) The patriotism of Max Cleland was NEVER questioned.

3) Those swiftboat-vet ads were NOT false, and...

4) The swiftboat ads did NOT slander Kerry, but instead attempted to correct Kerry's lies.

5) Rush Limbaugh did NOT label all those in the military who question our invasion and occupation of Iraq as "false soldiers". He labeled as "phony soldiers" such people as Jesse MacBeth.

Jesse MacBeth spoke out about atrocities he committed as a U.S. Army Ranger serving as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. MacBeth, 23, of Tacoma, claimed to have killed more than 200 people, many at close range, some as they prayed in a mosque. He spoke at an anti-war rally in Tacoma and appeared in a 20-minute anti-war video that circulated widely on the Internet. Trouble is, none of MacBeth's claims were true. Macbeth had been in the Army for just 44 days before he was kicked out of boot camp as unfit.

This is specifically who Limbaugh was referring to. You can read the transcripts HERE.

But then there is also Scott Beauchamp. He's actually a soldier, but The New Republic hired this U.S. Army private (and husband of one of its own reporters) to write first-hand accounts from Iraq. One of his accounts, supposedly demonstrating the dehumanizing effects of the Iraq war on him and fellow soldiers, occurred in Kuwait before Beauchamp even entered Iraq. But then it's easy to lie when you use a pseudonym. Who would've thought that there would be such a demand to learn his real identity?

Other parts of his writing are also false, as confirmed by people who served with him. In my opinion, he's as much a "phony soldier" as MacBeth. When you make claims about things that never occurred, you are a liar and a phony.

Interestingly enough, Senator Tom Harkin, who suggested that Rush Limbaugh must be "high on drugs" is himself a "phony vet". He claimed to be a fighter pilot in Vietnam during his 1992 bid for the Presidency. Turns out he was ferrying cargo in Japan. Ironic isn't it??
